1955 LOT..
1955 LOTUS Mk V1 Owned by Graham Haley My car is a Lotus MKV1 first registered in March 1955 (Chassis No.46) This model was the first production car ever built by Lotus at their works in Hornsey North London. The production run was between 1953 & 1956 with only 110 been built. Quite a lot were used in competitions as mine was with a great degree of success !! Through the Historic Lotus Register I managed to trace the original owner, a Mr Bob Hicks who did race my car, and he did send me all the original receipts from when he purchased it. All the running gear is from the Ford E93a with quite a few modifications like the torque tube being shortened and the `A' frame front axle being split in the middle and made as independent suspension. The engine is the 1172cc side valve with twin 1'/4 SU carbs, aquaplane head and inlet manifold. The following paragraph is taken from the original sales leaflet. "The major unit is the chassis frame is of semi-monocoque design and therefore extremely light and strong: it is supplied with all attachment points, including those for axles, suspension and steering components, engine and gear box. The total weight of this structure is 631bs.The plan bracing of the frame comprises a sheet of high tensile light alloy riveted to the underside which serves both as under-tray and flooring. This has the advantage of giving a low centre of gravity with good ground clearance, effecting at the same time a great saving in weight". My car still has the original 6V electrics and cable brakes (not for the feint-hearted) and is quite an exciting drive!!
